LACare Lakes Area Care, Inc. (LACare) is an ecumenical, nonprofit organization providing emergency food for families residing in the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District. Volunteers pick up bread at HEB, help clients complete paper work for free prescriptions from pharmaceutical companies, and assist in selecting and sacking food at the food bank. Seton Highland Lakes Hospital Volunteers A wide variety of opportunities are at Seton Highland Lakes: work in the gift shop, serve in the Emergency Department, serve at the Information Desk, shred documents, deliver food trays, offer daily newspapers. Contact: Mary Stevens
Care-A-Van Volunteers go with the van to different elementary schools to offer medical help for students and their siblings. Contact: Joe Urias
Public School Volunteers People assist in the Burnet CISD classrooms on a weekly basis assisting teachers. Contact: Linda Dyke
Literacy Highland Lakes Volunteers provide instruction to adults throughout the Highland Lakes area in Adult Basic Education, Pre-GED, GED, ESL, citizenship preparation, and college entrance prep. Contact: Fr. Ted
aCross the Street This is a tutoring program for 3rd graders. Through this program, volunteers provide support for classroom instruction, homework assistance, and personal attention to a group of children identified as “at risk” by their classroom teachers. Each tutoring session, held on Monday, begins with a healthy snack and some fellowship, followed by some “fun” work. This consists of reading a poem for fluency, identifying vocabulary words, talking about punctuation and comprehension. The group then breaks into smaller subunits for reading or math work.
